Any reason to need USB->TTL after initial rooting?

This is sort of a follow-up question to my other thread about installing pin headers into UART1. After the initial rooting of the Revue, is there any other reason to need to hook up the USB->TTL device? If it's only useful to do the initial rooting, then I might not bother installing pin headers and just solder wires straight to the board instead, desoldering the wires afterward. Thanks.

My understanding is that you will continue to need the USB->TTL every time you want to update to a new build?
