why should i root?

Hi,
what are the benefits when I root my NSZ-GT1?
I use GTV for a year now, first the logitech revue and then NSZ-GT1.
What i miss with the sony box, is the IR-Blaster compatiblity to all my other devices, that i had with my logitch revue.
Is there a way to get the Revue IR-Codes on my Sony?
