How To: Root the Co-Star

Now, maybe this is common information to the GTVHacker team, but it's not really readily available that there is a current simple method of rooting the Vizio Co-Star. It is listed on the GTVHacker page that "Cydia Impactor" a tool written by saurik, is able to root ANY GTV device, they don't mention whether or not the Vizio is included in that. It is. You can follow the same directions listed on the GTVHacker site for Cydia Impactor (link 2). You will need the most recent Cydia Impactor from link 1, then 'GTV Modification package' from the bottom of the second linked site. You just need to follow the instructions for persistent root. It's simply setting up and enabling ADB on the Co-Star, then following a few instructions. It's worth pointing out that after setting 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' I had settings permanently forced closed on the Co-Star it actually renders the device unusable, but if you reconnect, and run the GTV Modification script, it resets that to 0, and all is well. The stock recovery looks pretty similar to what you get on android, my understanding from the DC21 video, is that it's not possible to throw together a plain CWM because GTV uses a different type of framebuffer. Also, I imagine since writing a different Kernel will effectively brick your device if you don't have a "stock" kernel, and modified ramdisk preceding it... you'd probably want to run the stock kernel against a checksum in the recovery before flashing.

(my understanding is that the custom recovery for the other V2 GTV's is actually more of a bootloader that would load at every boot? I guess that would take care of bricks.)

Is there any benefit to rooting your GTV device?

Same question, what is the benefit of rooting? I know it will enable us to instsll apps that require root like SU, busybox, and Titanium Backup, but what else?
