noob needing some help with logitech revue

hi...the tutorial is straight forward but vague. i bought usb > ttl off ebay...soldered my wires to my brand new logitech revue's uart1 rx,tx,gnd, 3.3

questions:

- seems like putty only wants to communicate by com1 (rs232)...do i now need usb > rs232 adapter

- do i have to have logitech revue hooked up to tv during initial flash

sorry for the really stupid questions.....very new

if someone could give me a link to a more in depth tutorial it would be much appreciated.
