Honeycomb + Software root = Possible Now?

Yep dreaming is all we can do. It's even worse actually with Honeycomb beta leak. The bootloaders (boot.img) and recovery (recovery.img) are encrypted. Now you can't even view the files or setup in them.

So if someone had the ability to port say clockwork recovery for our device it's not possible with boot.img being encrypted. Not sure even then, because there is some signature checking with the update.zip and files inside.

In regards to those apps, I doubt it. Haven't tried but /system is read only, and could only be changed with a custom recovery/boot/kernel lol which again isn't possible with it it being encrypted, "Yet" as far as I know.

That post is from October 2010 and has no bearing on the HC leak.
The HC files do not unpack with unsquashfs, AFAIK

No, there is some sort of encryption going on. If you compare the current (3.1) system.img with the one from 2,1, you will see what is going on.

Yep, either encryption or obfuscation at this point hard to tell.

So what if I were able to port the recovery.img to be a clockwork recovery based on http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/10/por ... o-new.html?

Drop the recovery.img back into the update.zip which is already signed, and run it. Would that provide a custom recovery? Or just brick the box?

I guess what I'm asking is there other checking involved that would prevent making a custom recovery?

Building a recovery from Koush's source is not a difficult task, getting said recovery on the device is the hurdle. The above method would yeild zero results. You cannot just drop im whatever you please into the build for a non-rooted device. Any modification will break the sig and thus a install aborted.

Z4Root does not have landscape mode so it just closes

Gingerbreak did something Because when I reboot now I get about 1/2 second of the old boot logo then black then the new boot logo.

You cannot just drop im whatever you please into the build for a non-rooted device. Any modification will break the sig and thus a install aborted.

Yeah I hear you on that. I guess I was wondering too, instead of breaking the signature, you would just be replacing the recovery.img inside of the update.zip.

Open original in WinRAR and drop the modded recovery.img into the same window. No repackaging occurs so as to leave the same signature on the update.zip.

Same process when themeing so you don't have to resign the APK's. Just a thought.

It won't work. That's not how signatures are calculated or work. Modifying the recovery.img in any way invalidates/kills the signature.
