Yeah the update that fixes the 'exploit' will auto update as reported by several people. Best bet if you want to root is to sell and buy a new box.

Would it be possible to attach an external WiFi adapter and get it to work? The AWUS036h has linux drivers and that is the one I am leaning toward.
